Topping
the sale of herd bull prospects in the bull calf offering was
CH 69G Liberty 17L, a Feb. 1 son of PDHR 9322 Domino 69G
and out of a daughter of LLL 77Y Std Dom 82B. He was the heaviest
calf in the sale at 1,194 pounds with a scrotal circumference
of 37 cm. He exhibited the outstanding EPDs of BW 8.1, WW 64,
YW 102, Milk 30 and M&G 62. The two-thirds interest and
full possession brought $10,000 and sold to Bar
Pipe Farms, Okotoks.
This year,
Cutler Herefords provided extensive ultrasound results on all
of the bull calves, taken approximately three weeks prior to
the sale. These figures included marbling scores, backfat measurements,
ribeye areas, adjusted ribeye area per 100 pounds live weight
and percentage lean meat yield.
The
second top selling calf in the sale was the one who exhibited
the largest ribeye of the group and he sold into the excellent
herd of Poplar Dell Hereford Ranch, Edam, Sask., for $5,000.
He was CH 69G Lieutenant 58L, again by the very popular
69G and out of HR Miss
Robin Hood 85E, a daughter of CFR Robinson 359. This calf also
tipped the scales at over 1,100 pounds at 1,124 and sold with
excellent milk EPDs. Poplar Dell purchased a three-quarter interest
and full possession.

Another
top registered outfit from the area, Rainy
Creek Herefords, Bentley, owned by the Allan and
Merlyn Wilson families, paid $4,750 for a three-quarter interest
and full possession in their choice of CH 69G Limited Edition
35L. Again by 69G, he is out of CH 94Y Bonnie 121B, a daughter
of BP Hot Shot 94Y. 35L combines great balance with performance
and was one of the more stylish and well marked calves in the
offering.
The
OC Ranch, Hardisty, purchased two calves at this year's sale.
Their top selection was CH 20J Leadtime 41L, a Feb. 8
son of CH 69G Jag 20J,
who sold at the sale two years ago to Thatcher Ranches and T
Bar K Herefords. 41L is out of CH 711 Chelsey 1C. Again, this
calf comes from a dam and a cow family with an excellent reputation
with the mother having produced several top sellers in previous
sales.
Barber
Farms, Leslie, Sask., purchased females as well as a bull
at the sale. Their bull calf selection was also a 69G
son and came from CH 15A Cora 123C, a daughter of CH
55Y Ace 15A. He had a very light birth weight of 87 pounds and
an exceptional weaning weight of 826 pounds. He was the highest
marbling calf offered from the information provided by the ultrasound.
